  • The author compared the M1 and M4 models, finding that the M1 is sufficient for their needs, with the M4 offering features like MagSafe, fast charging, and a brighter screen, but not essential for their use case.
  • The author suggests that the M1 MacBook Air is sufficient for general use, such as writing, email, web browsing, and photo editing, and that upgrading to the M4 might not be necessary.

As a tech journalist, I had the opportunity to try out the new MacBook Air with M1 processor, and I must say, I’m a fan of its iconic wedge design. I was particularly drawn to its slim profile, making it easy to carry around. However, as someone who primarily uses their device for writing and light tasks, I couldn’t find any compelling reason to upgrade to the newer M4 model.

In my case, the M1 MacBook Air is sufficient for my needs, which mostly involve writing, email, web browsing, and occasional photo editing. While the M4 model offers some advanced features like MagSafe and fast charging, these aren’t essential for my use case. I don’t need the M4’s 12MP Center Stage camera or mics with voice isolation for video calls or outdoor use, as I predominantly use my device indoors.

For those considering purchasing a MacBook as their only Mac, the M4’s additional features may be tempting, especially if you’ll be using it for demanding tasks like coding or video editing. However, for those like me who prioritize portability and simplicity, the Apple Silicon MacBook Air is more than sufficient.

Recommendation: If you’re in the market for a MacBook Air, it’s worth considering the price difference between the M2 and M3 models. With less of a financial saving, it might be better to wait for future discounting on the M4 model. My experience with the M1 MacBook Air has been a positive one, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those with similar needs.
