Key Points:
- Apple’s new Powerbeats Pro 2 wireless earbuds feature a built-in heart rate sensor, a first for Apple outside of the Apple Watch.
- Apple is planning to introduce health-related sensors to other devices, including the next generation of AirPods.
- AirPods Pro 3 may include a heart rate sensor, with a potential release later this year.
As part of its ongoing efforts to make its devices more health-conscious, Apple has unveiled the Powerbeats Pro 2 wireless earbuds, which come equipped with a built-in heart rate sensor. This is a first for an Apple product outside of the Apple Watch, and hints at even more health-related features coming to other devices in the future.
But what about the AirPods? Will they too get a heart rate sensor? The answer is yes, according to multiple sources. Apple is working on AirPods with health-related sensors, and it’s expected to introduce similar technology to the AirPods Pro 3.
The next generation of AirPods Pro may include a heart rate sensor, building on the design of the Powerbeats Pro 2. This is no surprise, given that AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2022, making it likely that AirPods Pro 3 will drop later this year.
But that’s not all. Apple is also exploring other health-related sensors for AirPods, including the ability to detect body temperature through the ear canal. Additionally, the company is working on camera sensors for AirPods, although these technologies won’t be ready in time for AirPods Pro 3.
As for the design of AirPods Pro 3, it’s expected to sport a refreshed look, although details are scarce. The entry-level AirPods model was recently updated with a new design and active noise cancellation, so it’s unlikely that a new version will arrive anytime soon. As for AirPods Max, it seems that Apple has no "meaningful" plans for an update, given its recent refresh with USB-C.
