Key Points:
• Apple has canceled its plans for Mac-tethered AR glasses, marking a new direction for the company’s augmented reality (AR) glasses development.

• The company’s long-term goal is to release a pair of AR glasses, but it likely won’t happen for at least 3-5 years.
Apple’s Augmented Reality (AR) glasses have been making headlines recently, with reports of the company canceling its plans for Mac-tethered AR glasses. But don’t worry, this isn’t the end of Apple’s AR ambitions. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is still working on standalone AR glasses, but it’s going to take some time to get it right.
For those who might be unfamiliar, the canceled Mac-tethered AR glasses would have been a pair of glasses that require a connection to a Mac to function. This idea wasn’t very exciting, especially considering the company’s high standards. It’s no surprise that Apple decided to cancel the project and focus on something better.
The new direction for Apple’s AR glasses is towards a standalone pair, which will be more like the prototype from Meta, worth $10,000. This will require significant advancements in technology, including screens and silicon, which the company is working on.
The good news is that Apple is committed to making AR a reality, and their long-term goal is still to release a pair of AR glasses. However, we can expect to wait at least 3-5 years before we see a final product.
In the meantime, we can keep an eye on the company’s progress through their Vision Products Group, which is working on the underlying technology. Let’s hope they bring something truly innovative to the table.
