Key Points:
- Apple has partnered with Alibaba to enable Apple Intelligence in China, in compliance with local regulatory requirements on AI processing.
- China’s data localization regulations require data to be processed on local servers, rather than being sent to third-party servers in other countries.
- Apple’s partnership with Alibaba will create an on-device AI system that analyzes and modifies AI models to ensure compliance with Chinese government requirements.
Apple’s partnership with Alibaba: Enabling Apple Intelligence in China
In a move to comply with China’s strict regulatory requirements on artificial intelligence, Apple has partnered with Alibaba to enable Apple Intelligence features in the country. This partnership is designed to allow Apple devices to process and analyze AI data locally, rather than sending it to third-party servers in other countries.
As part of the agreement, Alibaba will power Apple Intelligence features on iOS and macOS devices, with the goal of filtering and censoring AI output to ensure compliance with Chinese government requirements. According to Mark Gurman, Apple has also partnered with Baidu to power features such as Visual Intelligence, which will replace Google and OpenAI.
How it Works:
In China, Apple devices will detect when they’re running an outdated AI model and will automatically disable Apple Intelligence until new models are downloaded in the background. This process will happen seamlessly without users noticing.
Baidu will also power features such as Visual Intelligence, which is currently reliant on Google and OpenAI. Some more complex Apple Intelligence requests will be processed online through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. In China, these requests will be processed on servers operated by state-affiliated GCBD, which already operates iCloud for Chinese users.
Expanding Apple Intelligence: New Languages and Timeline
Apple has confirmed that it will expand Apple Intelligence support to more languages with the release of iOS 18.4, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. While Apple Intelligence will be enabled in China, it’s unclear when it will be available to users. The report suggests that Apple may wait until May to enable Apple Intelligence for Chinese users.
What’s Next?
The first beta of iOS 18.4 is expected to be released to developers next week. As users, this means that you can expect a more personalized and intelligent experience on your Apple devices. With Apple Intelligence, you’ll be able to enjoy features like more robust search suggestions, improved photo recognition, and enhanced Siri capabilities. Stay tuned for more updates on Apple’s AI endeavors and how it will shape the future of your Apple devices.
