Instead, it might be dubbed "iPhone 16E". While this might seem like a weird rumor, I think it actually makes sense, given what we know so far about the iPhone SE 4.
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be a major upgrade, with a new form factor, A16 Bionic chip, and support for 5G. This would be the first major iPhone SE refresh in five years, and it’s likely to be a significant departure from the current model. The rumors suggest that the phone will have a 6.1-inch display, which is larger than the current iPhone SE.
One of the biggest questions surrounding the iPhone SE 4 is its price. Some sources have suggested that it could be as low as $499, which seems too good to be true. However, there are a couple of factors that could contribute to a lower price tag. Firstly, Apple is developing its own modems, which could allow it to ditch Qualcomm’s pricier modems. Secondly, the phone might use display panels from BOE and LG, which are likely to be more affordable than Samsung’s OLED panels.
If the iPhone SE 4 does indeed cost $499, it would be a significant departure from Apple’s usual pricing strategy. The iPhone 14 starts at $599, and the iPhone 15 starts at $699. However, the iPhone SE 4 would be a more affordable option with similar specs to the iPhone 15.
The "iPhone 16E" naming scheme makes sense to me. If Apple ditches the SE branding, it could sell the phone for $599 without a ton of backlash. The iPhone 15 would still be available after the iPhone SE 4/16E releases, and the new name would highlight that the iPhone 15 is an older phone without support for Apple Intelligence, despite carrying a higher price.
Overall, I think the "iPhone 16E" rumor is a good one. It would be a cleaner name for consumers, signifying that the phone is part of the current lineup. It would also help to reshape how people view the iPhone SE, which has historically been known as the smaller phone.
