Key Points:
• Apple could upgrade the MacBook Air’s display to 600 nits, matching the standard brightness of other recent devices.
• Improving thermals in the MacBook Air could provide a significant usability upgrade, especially for users who notice their machine getting hot under moderate workflows.
• Adding Center Stage camera capabilities to the MacBook Air would enhance FaceTime and provide useful features like Desk View.
As a tech journalist, I’ve always been drawn to the MacBook Air for its portability and thinness. While it’s not a perfect computer, there are some simple upgrades that I’d like to see Apple make with the M4 MacBook Air this year.
Firstly, bumping the display brightness to 600 nits would be a welcome upgrade. Apple has recently increased the standard brightness on several of its devices, including the M4 MacBook Pro and the new M2 iPad Air. This would provide a solid usability upgrade to MacBook Air buyers and make it a more compelling package.
Secondly, improving thermals would be a significant upgrade. Apple has been improving thermals across the board in devices that rely on passive cooling, and the MacBook Air is no exception. Many users have complained about thermals in the MacBook Air, which can get hot under moderate workflows. Apple could definitely improve the thermals in the next MacBook Air, making it a more enjoyable and reliable device.
Lastly, adding Center Stage camera capabilities would be a great feature to see in the MacBook Air. This technology, already available in the M4 iMac and M4 MacBook Pro, makes FaceTime more fun and provides useful features like Desk View. It’s a feature that everyone can appreciate, and it would make the MacBook Air a more attractive option for those who value good webcams.
These three upgrades would make the MacBook Air a far more compelling package, at least to me. While it’s not perfect, the MacBook Air is my go-to laptop for its portability and thinness. If Apple were to make these upgrades, I’d be even more excited to upgrade to a 15-inch model.
