Key Points:
• Apple SVP of AI John Giannandrea is no longer in charge of Siri product development.
• Mike Rockwell, previously leading Vision Pro, will take over as the new head of Siri.
• Rockwell has expressed concerns about Siri’s capabilities and has a background in product development.
Apple’s AI journey has been a long and winding road, with Siri being a key player. In a recent shake-up, SVP of AI John Giannandrea has "lost confidence" in the product and will no longer be in charge of Siri’s development. Taking over the reins is Mike Rockwell, the current head of Vision Pro. With a background in product development, Rockwell has shown a keen sense of frustration with Siri’s capabilities, even going so far as to suggest building an alternative assistant. This candor is refreshing, and I’m optimistic about Rockwell’s ability to turn Siri around.
Rockwell’s past experiences have given him a unique perspective on Siri. While working on the Apple Vision Pro, his team reportedly expressed disappointment with the assistant’s performance, even considering alternative methods of control. In another instance, Rockwell criticized Siri, pitching new ideas "for years." It’s clear that Rockwell has been vocal about his concerns with Siri, but I’m hopeful that this transparency will lead to positive change.
In comparison, the previous leadership, under Giannandrea, seemed to downplay Siri’s limitations. Siri Director Robby Walker, under Giannandrea, drew parallels between the latest Siri efforts and attempting to swim to Hawaii, only to fall short. This analogy was puzzling, to say the least, and did little to inspire confidence in the assistant’s future.
As Rockwell settles into his new role, I’m excited to see how his experience and passion will shape the future of Siri. It won’t be an easy task, but I’m confident that he can lead Siri to better days. With the upcoming WWDC25 event, I’m looking forward to learning more about Rockwell’s vision for Siri and its potential trajectory. For now, I’ll be keeping a close eye on Apple’s AI division and keeping my fingers crossed for a more positive Siri story to emerge.
