Shock Exit: Top Linux Dev Abandons Apple’s Faulty Silicon Transition

Share

Key Points:

• Hector Martin, the project lead of Asahi Linux, has resigned due to burnout and challenges with the Linux community.
• Asahi Linux is a community effort to port Linux to Apple Silicon, and it has been a challenging project.
• The project will continue without Martin, with the team aiming to achieve kernel upstreaming and improve testing efforts in 2025.

As the tech world waits with bated breath for the latest updates from Apple, a significant development has emerged from the world of Linux. Hector Martin, the project lead of Asahi Linux, has resigned from his position, citing burnout and the challenges he faced in his efforts to port Linux to Apple Silicon. This news comes as a surprise, as Martin had been instrumental in making significant progress on the project, including the release of an alpha build for M1 and M2 Macs in early 2022.

What happened?

Martin and the Asahi Linux team faced a series of challenges, including "entitled users" who refused to stop complaining, despite the impressive feats achieved by the project. Additionally, Martin faced opposition from key developers in the Linux community, including Linus Torvalds, who, although initially supportive, failed to provide the necessary hands-on involvement to help the project move forward. As a result, Martin felt that he had no choice but to resign.

What’s next?

Despite the setback, Asahi Linux will continue to move forward, with the team aiming to achieve kernel upstreaming in 2025, a major milestone that would see the necessary drivers for M1 and M2 Macs become part of the Linux kernel. In the short term, the team plans to improve testing efforts and develop new features, such as DisplayPort alt mode, DirectX 12 support, and internal microphone support for M1 and M2 devices. However, new hardware support for M3 and M4 Macs may take longer, as it is not a priority for the project.

As the technology world continues to evolve, it is crucial for projects like Asahi Linux to push the boundaries of innovation. I wish the team the best and look forward to reporting on their future progress.
