Update: Apple Launches Comprehensive Health Study in Research App

Apple has launched the Apple Health Study, a new research initiative that aims to further understand the role of technology in advancing and improving physical, mental, and overall wellbeing. This collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a leading research hospital and major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, will explore relationships between various areas of health, such as mental health’s impact on heart rate, or how sleep can influence exercise.

The study builds on learnings from previous Apple health studies, including the Apple Women’s Health Study, the Apple Hearing Study, and the Apple Heart and Movement Study, which combined have more than 350,000 participants across the US. By tapping into the vast amounts of data collected from Apple devices such as iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, researchers hope to identify patterns and connections that can predict, detect, and manage changes in health.

"This is a landmark moment for medical research, as we harness the power of technology to advance our understanding of human health," said Calum MacRae, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist at Harvard Medical School and principal investigator of the Apple Health Study. "We are excited to be part of this ground-breaking study, which was made possible by the innovative features of Apple devices that people already carry with them every day."

The Apple Health Study is designed to be a longitudinal, virtual study, exploring connections across a range of health areas, including activity, aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, mobility, neurologic health, respiratory health, sleep, and more. By analyzing these connections, researchers aim to identify early warning signs of potential health issues and develop more proactive approaches to prevention and treatment.

The study is open for enrollment through the Research app, which is available in version 6.0 on iPhone models compatible with iOS 16 or later. Participants can choose which data types they’d like to share with researchers, and are free to withdraw at any time. Apple does not have access to identifying information, ensuring the privacy and security of participants’ data.

As the study progresses, Apple’s goal is to use the insights gleaned from this research to develop new health-related features and improve existing ones, ultimately helping to advance the field of healthcare. For now, you can participate in the Apple Health Study by downloading the Research app and enrolling in the study – take the first step towards a healthier, more empowered you.
