Key Points:
• Telegram is rolling out a new system for account verification, allowing third-party organizations to verify accounts in addition to the existing approach of verifying public figures and organizations.
• The new system aims to prevent scams and reduce misinformation by allowing verified organizations to verify additional accounts within their network.
• Accounts verified by third-party organizations will display a new logo next to their names instead of a blue checkmark.
As a tech journalist, I’m excited to report that Telegram is taking a bold step towards reducing scams and misinformation by introducing a new system for account verification. Building on the existing process of verifying public figures and organizations, Telegram is now enabling third-party organizations to verify accounts within their network, setting a new standard for social platforms.
The existing system requires public figures and organizations to provide evidence of their notability by linking to at least two pieces of press coverage from credible, English-language publications and including a Telegram link in their bio on at least two other platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, VK, or Snapchat). In contrast, the new system allows already-verified organizations to verify additional accounts within their network, providing a more decentralized and trustworthy approach.
The new verification process is designed to be user-friendly, with accounts that are verified by third-party organizations displaying a new logo next to their names instead of a blue checkmark. Verified entities can use Telegram’s Bot API to assign or remove verification, and the verifying organization’s name will be displayed alongside the verified account’s name. For example, a verified 9to5Mac account would have the ability to verify each of its writers, featuring the 9to5Mac logo next to their names.
In a blog post, Telegram emphasized the benefits of this decentralized approach, stating that it "will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms." This move will undoubtedly increase trust and accountability within the Telegram community, making it a more appealing option for users and organizations alike.
As we await the rollout of this new feature, I’m excited to see how this increased emphasis on verification will impact the world of social media and online communication. For now, take this opportunity to review your own online presence, ensuring that your social media profiles are up-to-date and secure. Who knows? You might just become the next verified sensation on Telegram!
