Fixing the iMessage Fail: Apple, It’s Time to Sweat the Details!

Share

Key Points:

• Apple’s Messages app doesn’t properly render AVIF image files, a popular file format, on iOS and macOS.
• Despite supporting AVIF in Safari and Photos, Apple hasn’t implemented the same support in iMessage, making it difficult to view and use these images.
• Users who send AVIF images will see a small, unexpandable preview, making it hard to properly view the image.

As a tech journalist, I’ve been keeping an eye on Apple’s Messages app and, unfortunately, I’ve noticed a peculiar bug that’s been ongoing for years. Specifically, when it comes to sending and receiving AVIF image files via iMessage, the issue arises. AVIF is a widely used image format, and it’s surprising that Apple hasn’t addressed this issue yet.

The problem is that when you send an AVIF image file through iMessage, it doesn’t render properly. Instead, it appears in a small window with no option to expand the preview. This means that the image is barely readable, making it a frustrating experience for users. This issue is not limited to iOS devices; it also affects macOS.

What’s even more surprising is that Apple does support AVIF files, at least in Safari and Photos. In fact, the company added support for AVIF in Safari in iOS 16, over two years ago. Given this support, it’s unclear why Apple hasn’t extended it to iMessage.

As a result, when you send an AVIF image, it will be visible in the Message send preview, and you’ll only discover the issue when you try to open the file. This can lead to a confusing and annoying experience, especially when trying to communicate with friends and family.

It’s essential that Apple addresses this issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you’re an avid user of AVIF images, you might want to consider using alternative image formats or keeping a backup of your images in a different format.
